Fertilizers are made on our own farm using the minimum resources that are required and following the ecological protocols, supervision and technical guidelines established by highly qualified personnel in organic farming. The fertilizers that we have obtained meet comfortably the required standards for these types of products.
One of the projects that we are going to develop in the short term is the incorporation of livestock to our facilities, which will allow us to produce the manure we need directly. This will put us closer to the goal of being 100% self-sustainable so that Ecofinca Nogales can be considered as a reference for all the farms not only in the region but on the island of La Palma in the promotion of ecological and sustainable crops.
The calculation of the water footprint can also be included among the different measures which are contemplated in the development of this project. We have been evaluating the water consumption in our cultivated lands, taking into account the consumption patterns in each crop, leading us to improve the water distribution by optimizing the irrigation systems. With the implementation of these measures, we have reached a saving that exceeds 30% in the consumption of water.
Our monitoring network provides accurate information on the water status of the soil. These values are later processed and we can establish the dose of irrigation required by each crop, as well as avoiding the problems of ponding that have a direct impact on the health of the root system.
We have also included the carbon footprint record as a pilot project, thus quantifying the emissions of gases that have a direct impact on the greenhouse effect. The values that we are obtaining will allow us to determine the impact generated by each activity in global warming and assess the carbon footprint as a tool for raising awareness, given its direct impact on the environment.
In addition, Ecofinca Nogales is connected to a meteorological station, which allows us to have the climatic and atmospheric conditions that we need for the development of our activities, besides collaborating and giving weather information to the farms located in our surroundings.
